He worked for Holly Sugar, Fraser Logging Company, Colorado West Electric and eventually started his own excavation company while running the multi-generational family farm in Orchard City.
Doug met his life-long love Patty in 1968, they got to know each other while working at the Egyptian, Big Sky and Tru Vu Theaters, Patty ran concessions while Doug ran the projector. They became best friends and fell in love while attending Delta High School.
Doug and Patty got married on May 24th, 1972 at the Delta County Courthouse.
They enjoyed growing their family, a variety of crops, and livestock through the years. Doug and Patty taught their children the value of hard work while successfully running the farm and business. As the fourth generation on the Orchard City homestead, Doug saw to many upgrades and improvements to the farm. He took great pride in a job well done. He was creative, resourceful, and entirely self-sufficient. Doug was a mechanic, machinist, plumber, fabricator, sculptor of metal, an electrician, and horticulturist. There was nothing Doug couldn't grow, design, build, or repair.
Carlson Backhoe Service took on both large and small contracts for over 40 years. Doug put in countless utility services and septic systems for homes and businesses in Delta County. He was one of the most trusted local equipment operators called on by utility companies and homeowners when there was a need. His attention to safety and detail generated great respect for his abilities and the relationships he built with his customers were lifelong.
Doug was actively involved in the Delta Elks Lodge #1235, served as trustee and was awarded Elk of The Year in 1995. He was a member for 40 years and an afternoon stop to the club room to enjoy a few cold Coors Originals and conversation with friends was common.
Doug was well known for his love of rock & roll and spending time with his family and friends. Boating trips to the lake or down the Gunnison were full of laughter and created great memories for all who got to go with Doug. Doug’s shop on the farm was a favorite location to gather, enjoy time with him, and learn from Doug. Unapologetically authentic and opinionated, Doug was passionate about life. He lived hard and loved hard with a fierce work ethic and raw sense of humor. Doug Carlson will be greatly missed.
