It is with great sadness that the family of Karen Ann Kerns, 79, announce her passing on Friday May 31, 2019, in Grand Junction, Colorado.
Karen was born March 8, 1940, in Denver Colorado to Martin and Magdalene Shoeneman.
She lived and attended school in Antonito, Roggen and Denver Colorado. She attended Lorretta Heights College of Denver.
Karen met James Kerns in Denver Colorado. They were married April 15th 1961, and divorced 30 years later. Karen was a wonderful mom and homemaker. She re-entered the workforce after her youngest son began school. She lived in Denver until her retirement in 2004 when she relocated to Cedaredge, Colorado to be with some of her children and grandchildren.
Throughout her life she was always active in the church. Karen passion was her family and the church. She would always make the drive for anyone of her children or grandchildren to cheer them on at a performance, sporting event or just to be with them to celebrate a holiday. Her secret passion was traveling. She always loved to drive in the rain and just go see the sights.
She continued her love and faith in the church by taking a four year course which she became certified prior to her participation in the Blessed Mary Mother of Dominic Community of Cedaredge. She was an avid reader and student. She loved to learn. She was the Vice Moderator of the Blessed Mary Mother of Dominic Community of Cedaredge. Prior to that she had held several positions at St. Phillips Parrish such as President of the church council.
Karen always taught and led by example the importance of service to your community and church; helping others and encouraging continued education through her charitable giving, which remained a priority even in her later years.
Karen is survived by her daughter Risa of Cedaredge, CO, James of Denver, CO; Thom of Grand Junction, CO, and John of Denver, CO; sisters Michelle and Kristine; brother Michael; 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her siblings Renee, Jim, and Joel; and grandson Michael.
A celebration of her life will be held in Cedaredge, at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, on Friday June 21st, 2019 at 2pm.
