Delta, CO. – On September 5, 2019 at approximately 4:40 PM officers of the Delta Police Department responded to a residence in the 700 block of 1575 Road on a report of a domestic violence assault. The reported incident was found to be a false report made by scoffed social security scam caller who told the resident police would be coming to their home. Sure enough, police officers responded after the caller reported a domestic violence scenario occurring at the address inside in the city limits of Delta. It only took a few minutes to determine there were no violent activities occurring however this incident took time and resources of value away from other urgent and factual reports of criminal activity occurring in the city.
The Delta Police Department wants the community to know that we will respond to all requests for service or reports of activity occurring in the city regardless of who the caller may be. We are very concerned that a would be Identity Thief who was angered by one of our savvy residents who refused to fall for his felonious threats would in turn make such false reports against one of our community members. Thankfully officers were able to respond, contact the resident and investigate the situation in a quick, calm and well trained manner with minimal shock to the victims of such false accusations of violence.
The Delta Police Department believes this is an isolated occurrence as we have not received any further false reports with similar modus operandi.
Lastly, anyone who receives scam calls does not need to call the police to report they have a received a scam call with the expectation that they too will have police respond to their home due to a false report made against them. To do so would exponentially increase the call load on law enforcement unnecessarily.
If you feel you have been scammed or are the victim of Identity Theft or Fraud as a result of providing personally identifying information to a scam caller you can file a report the Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s ID Theft and Fraud Hotline at 1-855-443-3489 (toll free 24/7).
